The National Pathology Benchmarking Programme is the only national benchmarking programme for Pathology in the UK that ensures a meaningful comparison between similar networks and laboratories based on demand, complexity, and service delivery model, using a long-standing "comparing apples with apples" methodology for consistently counting and comparing activity, workforce, and cost.

Whilst the National Pathology Benchmarking Programme (NPBP) has become an essential tool to help NHS and international laboratories and networks evaluate the performance of their service against comparable peers; better understand where they might be able to achieve efficiency savings; and identify further opportunities for growth, the Demand Optimisation programme has a proven track record of contributing towards significant cost savings to both laboratory and the wider healthcare environment through more appropriate and effective use of Pathology services in Primary care. TBP offer two distinct components within our Pathology Demand Optimisation Programme, which include the GP Testing Analyses reports, and the Diabetes Patient Management Programme. Both are designed to help generate significant cost savings, both to the laboratory and the wider health economy, through more effective and appropriate use of Pathology testing to improve patient outcomes. They have a proven track record of success, helping the laboratory to deliver added value to GPs, and providing evidence to help demonstrate it.
Both the Laboratory Benchmarking and Demand Optimisation programmes can be delivered network-wide, with additional bespoke tools designed to aid with consolidation and workforce planning, and to also help the network to generate cost savings through workload standardisation and test repatriation. These programmes will help you identify ways to work more efficiently as a network, and provide invaluable data and intelligence around current service cost and usage to help inform network-wide strategy planning processes. There is usually no additional cost in delivering network wide reports and analyses over-and-above the usual programme subscription costs, provided all laboratories within the network are engaged in the process.

The Benchmarking Partnership are committed to contributing towards Pathology related research initiatives, and are particularly interested in further investigation into the relationship between effective use of testing and patient outcomes. The team have contributed towards many previous research publications, and are happy to consider proposals for further collaboration.
The TBP team have delivered a range of successful programmes in Australia, New Zealand, USA and Europe over the past decade, and are very interested in pursuing further similar projects - particularly where comparisons between the UK and other international healthcare systems could be explored.
